Friday, May 20, 2022 is World Bee Day for this year. A day to celebrate and recognize the critical importance of bees and other pollinators to the health of our entire world. First observed in 2018, World Bee Day is celebrated on May 20 in honor of Anton Janša, an early pioneer in modern beekeeping, with the inaugural celebration occurring in his birthplace in Slovenia.
There are about 20,000 species of bees with about 3,500 species native to North America and Mexico. Bees are almost completely responsible for the production of our entire food source, and for the health of humans and our environment overall. Honeybees account for the pollination of over 90% of the crops we eat as humans, and feed for production animals.
This year, in honor of World Bee Day, we kicked off our BEE-YOU-Niversal Pollinator Awareness Project, aimed at increasing awareness of our precious pollinator pals. Shop our BEE-YOU-Niversal collection and help support this project!
Recently, at our Spring 2022 Clean Up Event at Historic Friendship Cemetery, we spoke to volunteers and visitors about the importance of green spaces to passing pollinators. In the future, we hope to grow Friendship into a vibrant colorful space for all visitors with the addition of wildflowers, perennials and bulbs.
