Meet Mr. Pete

Updated: May 6, 2020

Mr. Pete is the Rhode Island Red who rules the roost here at RA Psychle. His breed is also the state bird of Rhode Island, as it was bred there in the latter part of the 19th century. Their plumage is traditionally deep red to black in color. Mr. Pete’s tail feathers are black with turquoise and emerald green hues.

See those spurs on the backs of his feet? They’re for protecting the hens from predators.

Mr. Pete not only crows at or before dawn each morning, he will also crow throughout the day to warn the hens of a nearby predator or to lead them to a new food source. We're not quite sure how old Mr. Pete is, but a rooster's lifespan is generally between 5 and 8 years, although they can live up to 15 years, so we hope to have him around for a long time!

FUN FACT: Chickens LOVE our garden scraps! We feed them from our garden and they in turn feed our garden with nutrient rich fertilizer. We call it "RA-cycling"!
